My Son's Trip To Cuba

17 students, myself included, and 3 professors from the University of Tampa took a trip spanning the island of Cuba; from Santiago de Cuba in the east all the way to La Habana in the west we traveled, visiting 5 other cities along the way. This 10 day journey was the best experience I've ever had...and this is our story.

Cuban dissident Oscar Elias Biscet says the praise from Bono at a Miami South Florida concert was for the Cuban people overall.

Cuba’s leading dissident, Oscar Elias Biscet, said he “was shaking with happiness” as he learned Thursday that rock star and social activist Bono had sung his praises during a jam-packed U2 concert in Miami.

The 73,000-strong audience at the Sun Life stadium roared with delight Wednesday when Bono urged support for the 49-year-old Biscet and declared that “some day soon Cuba will be free.”

“As you read me what he said, I was shaking with happiness because it showed it’s good when one is chosen as a symbol of his people,” Biscet told El Nuevo Herald, which first told him of Bono’s comments.

“He’s praising not me but all my people, all Cubans,” he added in a telephone interview from his home in Havana. “And I agree that Cuba will be free, if people like Bono join the cause” of human rights on the island.

Biscet, a physician awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2008, was released from prison in March after serving eight years of a 25-year sentence for “acts against the sovereignty and independence” of Cuba.

Bono praised Biscet during a segment of the U2 concert where the Irish band pays homage to human rights and people walk around the stage carrying paper lanterns with the symbol of the London-based Amnesty International.

“We’d like to do something we’ve never done before,” Bono announced as he asked the audience to hold up their hands during the song Walk On. “A beautiful man, a doctor who spent time in the prisons of Cuba. He was released. His name is Doctor Biscet.

“I want you to hold him up and let everyone in Cuba know he is special to us and we are watching, we are watching. Hold him in your thoughts. Hold him in your prayers,” Bono declared.

“It was a very moving moment,” said Republican Party consultant Ana Navarro, who was at the concert. “Obviously, a lot of the people in the audience were Cuban American and were Hispanic, and felt good about the expression of solidarity.”

Bono had met last week in Washington with Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and Sen. Marco Rubio, both Florida Republicans who urged the multi-cause activist to take note of Cuba’s long history of human rights abuses.

Diaz-Balart wrote in an email to Navarro that he had specifically spoken with Bono about Biscet and Orlando Zapata Tamayo, the political prisoner who died in 2010 following a lengthy hunger strike.

Diaz-Balart and his brother, former Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, also had met with Bono last year just before a concert in Miami, part of the band’s “U2 360 Tour,’’ which was cancelled when the lead singer underwent emergency back surgery.

During Wednesday’s concert, a video showing images of political violence, including the so-called Arab Spring uprisings against Middle East dictators, was projected over the stage as the band played the song Sunday bloody Sunday.

Another video of Myanmar dissident Aung San Suu Kyi, only recently freed by her Asian country’s military rulers after years of house arrest, was shown during the song Walk On.

Bono sparked a loud roar and applause from the audience when he mentioned Biscet, even though there was no image or video of the Havana doctor, according to concert goers.

“That was really powerful,” said Alvaro Hernandez, a Miami Dade College student who left Cuba eight years ago. “That guy is famous around the world, and his mention of Cuba is like shinning a big light on the Castro dictatorship.’’

Biscet is one of the more than 125 political prisoners freed over the past year as part of the Cuban Catholic Church’s unprecedented mediation with the communist government of Raúl Castro. Almost all went directly from prison to exile in Spain, but Biscet and 11 others insisted on staying in Cuba — and were the last to be released.

Now chairman of the Lawton Foundation for human rights, Biscet became a dissident in the mid-1990s, when he alleged that many infants were being killed after being delivered alive during abortions. Cuba has Latin America’s highest abortion rate.

Police detained Biscet 27 times for brief periods between February of 1998 and November of 1999, when he was sentenced to three years in prison for organizing a peaceful march just before a Havana summit from leaders of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking nations.

He was freed in late 2002 but was arrested again 37 days later and was tried during the massive crackdown in 2003, known as Cuba’s Black Spring, when 75 dissidents were sentenced to lengthy prison terms after trials that seldom lasted more than a few hours.

Gas rationing in the 70's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even have been good for us!

Are you aware that the Saudis are boycotting American products?

In addition, they are gouging us on oil prices.

Shouldn't we return the favor? Can't we take control of our own destiny and let these giant oil importers know who REALLY generates their profits, their living?

How about leaving American Dollars in America and reduce the import/export deficit?

An appealing remedy might be to boycott their GAS.. Every time you fill up your car you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia . Just purchase gas from companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis. Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill up my tank, I'm sending my money to people who I get the impression want me, my family and my friends dead.

The following gas companies import Middle Eastern oil:
Shell.....................................205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco...................144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil........................130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway...............117,740,000 barrels
Amoco..................................... 62,231,000 barrels

And CITGO oil is imported from Venezuela by Dictator Hugo Chavez who hates America and openly avows our economic destruction!
(We pay Chavez's regime nearly $10 Billion per year in oil revenues!)

The U.S. currently imports 5,517,000 barrels of crude oil per day from OPEC. If you do the math at $100 per barrel, that's over $550 million PER DAY ($200 BILLION per year!) handed over to OPEC, many of whose members are our confirmed enemies!!!!!

It won't stop here - oil prices could go to $200 a barrel or higher if we keep buying their product.

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:

A Christmas message to my friends.

We were the only family with children in the restaurant.
I sat Erik in a high chair and noticed everyone was quietly sitting and talking. Suddenly, Erik squealed with glee and said, 'Hi.' He pounded his fat baby hands on the high chair tray. His eyes were crinkled in laughter and his mouth was bared in a toothless grin, as he wriggled and giggled with merriment.

I looked around and saw the source of his merriment.
It was a man whose pants were baggy with a zipper at half-mast and his toes poked out of would-be shoes.
His shirt was dirty and his hair was uncombed and unwashed.
His whiskers were too short to be called a beard and his nose was so varicose it looked like a road map.
We were too far from him to smell, but I was sure he smelled. His hands waved and flapped on loose wrists.
'Hi there, baby; hi there, big boy. I see ya, buster,' the man said to Erik.

My husband and I exchanged looks, 'What do we do?'

Erik continued to laugh and answer, 'Hi.'

Everyone in the restaurant noticed and looked at us and then at the man. The old geezer was creating a nuisance with my beautiful baby.
Our meal came and the man began shouting from across the room, 'Do ya patty cake? Do you know peek-a-boo? Hey, look, he knows peek- a-boo.'

Nobody thought the old man was cute. He was obviously drunk.
My husband and I were embarrassed.
We ate in silence; all except for Erik, who was running through his repertoire for the admiring skid-row bum, who in turn, reciprocated with his cute comments.

We finally got through the meal and headed for the door. My husband went to pay the check and told me to meet him in the parking lot.
The old man sat poised between me and the door.
'Lord, just let me out of here before he speaks to me or Erik,' I prayed. As I drew closer to the man, I turned my back trying to sidestep him and avoid any air he might be breathing. As I did, Erik leaned over my arm, reaching with both arms in a baby's 'pick-me-up' position. Before I could stop him, Erik had propelled himself from my arms to the man.

Suddenly a very old smelly man and a very young baby consummated their love and kinship. Erik in an act of total trust, love, and submission laid his tiny head upon the man's ragged shoulder. The man's eyes closed, and I saw tears hover beneath his lashes.
His aged hands full of grime, pain, and hard labor, cradled my baby's bottom and stroked his back. No two beings have ever loved so deeply for so short a time.

I stood awestruck. The old man rocked and cradled Erik in his arms and his eyes opened and set squarely on mine. He said in a firm commanding voice,
'You take care of this baby.'

Somehow I managed, 'I will,' from a throat that contained a stone.

He pried Erik from his chest, lovingly and longingly, as though he were in pain.
I received my baby, and the man said, 'God bless you, ma'am, you've given me my Christmas gift.'

I said nothing more than a muttered thanks.
With Erik in my arms, I ran for the car. My husband was wondering why I was crying and holding Erik so tightly, and why I was saying, 'My God, my God, forgive me.'

I had just witnessed Christ's love shown through the innocence of a tiny child who saw no sin, who made no judgment; a child who saw a soul,
and a mother who saw a suit of clothes.

I was a Christian who was blind,
holding a child who was not.
I felt it was God asking, 'Are you willing to share your son for a moment?' when He shared His for all eternity.

The ragged old man, unwittingly, had reminded me,
'To enter the Kingdom of God , we must become as little children.'

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL.

He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies
unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".

But never forget this Marco, the Democrats got in due mostly to frustrations at the Republicans' ineffectiveness and spending. Real or perceived.

The GOP was fortunate to get a second chance to prove they aren't "Democrat Lite". Now you get to put your money where your campaign rhetoric was; resurrect the economy, create jobs and repeal the health care bill while replacing it with a more effective version. Not a small achievement.

The opinions and statements heard regarding the Florida preacher who wants to burn a quran or a hundred are amazing. How often has a high ranking military officer (General Petraeus) officially expressed his opinion in what should be none of his business? The controversy is strictly a civilian constitutional issue which has been hijacked by politicians.

The political correctness, fear of offending minorities (whether religious or racial) and most notably, the hypocrisy of the liberal left is well illustrated in this controversy.

As disgustingly vile and disturbing as burning or desecrating a religious or patriotic symbol is, (Christian, Muslim or otherwise) the freedom to do so in the U.S. should be protected.

Burn a bible or place a statue of Jesus in a bottle of urine and it is called exercising your first ammendment rights or "art". Burn a quran and it is sacrilegious and insulting!

And to those worrying that burning a book will "enrage" our enemies and cost American lives I ask, were our enemies not killing, beheading and dragging American bodies through their shit hole cities' streets and hanging them from their bridges BEFORE a quran was burned?

The Islamization of the world needs voices strong enough to say NO and ENOUGH and the US must lead the way. Europe certainly won't or can't. It would be a pleasant surpise if true, peaceful, Muslim religious leaders joined the party. Live and practise your religion in America as a Muslim, Jew, Christian or whatever and abide by her laws and customs. Try to establish your religious dominance here (Sharia Law) and be prepared to get your ass kicked out or your quran burned.

What's a "pin pan pun"? That's the question that started it all. Alejandro Medina and Adrian Perez where having a discussion when Alejandro's Colombian wife heard the term "pin pan pun" and asked what they were talking about. Obviously, she had never slept over a Cuban's home! The joke sparked an idea for the two friends and shortly thereafter, Ropa Vieja was born.

Ropa Vieja was founded in 2005 in Nueva Jersey, and was started because we felt there was a void of creative, fashion-forward clothing aimed at the Cuban and Hispanic communities. We wanted to fulfill the call for "sabor" in the street and sportswear industry, and have created a trend-setting, progressive line for all the Cubanazos and all Latinos. Ropa Vieja aims to celebrate our culture through fashion with a fresh, new perspective. The company is owned and operated by long-time Cuban-American friends, Alejandro and Adrian. Growing up in heavily Cuban environment, we were both exposed to the culture, and culture change of people from Cuba living in America.

This world has always been a breeding ground of visual and cultural inspiration. From the food to the music to the "slanguage", the ideal behind Ropa Vieja was born. That ideal has inspired our collection.

Forever Fighting Fidel: In Praise of Andy GarciaNot all Hollywood stars are knee-jerk “limousine liberals,” “Cadillac communists” or “Penthouse Bolsheviks” (to use a term coined in the Thirties to describe the excessive admiration many chic New Yorkers had for Stalin). And one of those exceptions is Andrés Arturo Garcia Menéndez, known to the world as Andy Garcia.

Of course, Andy – who has been a friend of mine for about ten years – had good reason to wander off the Hollywood liberal reservation. He was born in Cuba in 1956, just before the revolution, to a family opposed to Fidel Castro. They left the country when Andy was five and he has been fighting for his people against the Comandante/Caudillo’s totalitarian rule practically ever since.

When I first met Andy, I was a lefty myself, so we didn’t discuss politics much. We came together over a screenplay I had written called The Gardener, about an illegal alien living in LA, that Garcia wanted to star in. We never found the money, but remained friends, staying in touch often in an attempt to revive the movie that never got made. I also had an interest in things Cuban, having gone to see the seemingly-heroic, at least at the time, Castro speak in Central Park when I was thirteen-years old. Later (1979), I was a delegate to the first festival of the “New” Latin American Cinema in Havana. It was one of my first brushes with communism from the inside and some of my early disaffection with the left (yes, it took a long time for me to divorce myself) must stem from that trip. Cuba was like an island-sized jail to me then and, despite its beauty, I couldn’t have been more eager to leave.

But I maintained my interest in the subject and when I read last week that a demonstration was planned – led by Andy Garcia – in LA’s Echo Park in honor of Cuba’s Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White who fight for the freedom of family members incarcerated by the Castro regime), I phoned Andy to tell him I would like to come for PJTV. Not that it would have mattered. When the cameraman and I arrived at Echo Park on Sunday, we were surrounded by Cuban-Americans eager to tell their stories.

You can see that all on PJTV, but I would like to underscore how politically aware the Cubans at this demonstration were. And how sick they were of Hollywood, especially the love affair many of my colleagues have with Fidel Castro and Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara. That love affair is reminiscent of the attraction those “Penthouse Bolsheviks” referred to in my opening graph had for Stalin, as in Steven Soderbergh’s endless encomium to Che and Oliver Stone’s semi-sexualized crush on Castro, not to mention on Hugo Chavez.

But those are only obvious examples. This twisted love for totalitarians permeates much of the Hollywood culture. A director friend of mine told me with amusement that while on one of those Eighties cultural exchanges to Cuba, his wife couldn’t resist planting a big kiss on Castro’s cheek when the dictator made a surprise appearance at a reception they were attending. Such stories are typical.

I doubt Soderbergh or Stone or certainly the director’s wife ever spoke with Huber Matos, perhaps the most moving speaker at the Echo Park demonstration. In his nineties now, Matos was one of Fidel’s original comrades in the fight against Batista . But he made the mistake of voicing concern that the revolution was turning communist. For that, Che, in his typical fashion, wanted to put Matos in front of a firing squad (Al paredon!), but Fidel, not wanting to turn him into a martyr, intervened. Instead, the Caudillo incarcerated his former comrade for his views in the notorious prison at the Isle of Youth. There, Matos was tortured and had his cojones cut (quite literally) as he waited for twenty years to get out.

But back to the demonstration, the many Castro prisoners of today and Andy Garcia. These days, Cuba seems to be pretty much off our radar, except where Fidel’s health is concerned or for debates about the degree his brother Raúl is loosening things up (answer: not much). And given the interests of the current administration – its seeming disinterest in the activities of totalitarian regimes – this is not likely to change. All the more reason Andy Garcia – actor and Laker fan – is to be praised and supported. And, as you will see in the video, in LA’s Echo Park last weekend he was getting plenty of that praise and support from his fellow Cuban-Americans (and from Perez Hilton!). He deserves it.

Petalo Azul by Cuban Author Roberto Sanchez Cuesta

Some of you might already know that I was in the hair business for some 30 odd years until a few years ago when I decided to take my part time job of web design to full time status. While working in the hair business one of my co-workers was a gentleman whose name is Roberto Sanchez Cuesta. Roberto loved poetry and I would always watch him as he jotted down notes on small scraps of paper.

I have been out of the hair business for quite some time now and hadn't seen Roberto. I recently dropped by where his wife Nelly works near my home and found out thru his wife that Roberto's poetry had been published.

I was shocked to say the least and it was explained to me by his wife Nelly that she had gathered up dozens of these small notes that he had written throughout the years and with some help these writings had been transfered to a computer where they were compiled to make a rough draft and later a book of all his poetry.

I have started to read parts of his book where in his poems and decimas he talks about a multitude of subjects. Roberto was born in 1921 and always dreamed of seeing his poetry published, today at the wise age of 88 his dream has come true.

Hi, all, this happens to be my very first post on Cubanazos and I will keep it short. I would like to thank my good friend Artie and new friend Omar, for allowing me to contribute to this wonderful site.
This happens to be the holidays and living in this great New York Metropolitan area and as I do every year, I watched the lighting of the Rockefeller Christmas tree, last night. One thing I use to hear in previous years was, "Merry Christmas to all", thru out the show, I have not heard this the last few years. What have we become in America, that most people are afraid to say "Merry Christmas". I believe this is something that most people experince in Communist countries, not in America, what happened to freedom of speech.
I know it's early, but from my family and me, we wish everyone a wonderful Merry Christmas to all.

Old Friend Joins Cubanazos

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to let everyone know that we have a new contributing writer at Cubanazos.com, his name is Angel Hierrezuelo. Angel and I go back quite a ways. Angel and I first met shortly after Angel's arrival to the U.S. back in 1967. We were attending grammar school in West New York, New Jersey and we were just 13 years old. Amazing how time goes by. We also attended High School togther until I joined the Army in 1972. Unfortunately we lost touch for nealy 20 years until recently when I looked for my friend and was able to find him on the World Wide Web. It truly is a small world thanks to the internet. Although we haven't had alot of time to share together, I for one am very happy to have found my friend. You'll be hearing more from Angel himself here on Cubanazos.com as time goes by. So for now I wish him and his family the very best.

Here's a little background on Angel Hierrezuelo

Angel was born March, 1954 at Hospital Militar de Santiago de Cuba. He traveled from la Habana to Mexico City in late 1965, once he acquired his visa he entered the US, arriving in 1966 at La Guardia Airport, New York. While growing up he attended Memorial High in West New York, N.J. Studied engineering at the Newark College of Engineering. He graduated in 1977 and Presently works as a Design Engineer/Project Manager in NJ in charge of the U-Pick-It system. Angel invented and designed the U-Pick-It system which was featured in the Documentary “The World's Largest Casino, Macau, China” by the National Geographic.

I just checked this out on Snopes.com and to date it is undetermined if this letter is in fact, true...I will keep you updated but, in the meantime thought you might want to read it. Snopes says that there's no doubt that the man does exsist and is a long-serving veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Dear President Obama,

My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.
I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate. Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.
So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish. I can't figure out what country you are the president of.
You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
" We're no longer a Christian nation"
" America is arrogant" - (Your wife even Announced to the world,"America is mean-Spirited. " Please tell her to try preaching
That nonsense to 23 generations of our War dead buried all over the globe who Died for no other reason than to free a Whole lot of strangers from tyranny and Hopelessness.)
I'd say shame on the both of you, but I don't think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.
After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals."
Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.
I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue. You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.
And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.

You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That's not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

There's a lot of talented individuals in Cuba. Unfortunately not everyone gets the opportunity to show their talent. These guys have now been here in the U.S. for 9 months. I recently met Lerys and he's one down to earth guy, I expect they'll be going places with their music. I'd love to hear them playing on the radio but its a tough business to break in to.
