Los Van Van in Key West

Although the older I get the more I lean toward a "What the f... let them play their music", attitude, I still have very mixed feelings on their trip to the US.

On one hand I feel a sadness that is impossible to describe relating to the island and our people. On the other is a pride and longing to share our rich culture with those outside looking in through hazy windows.

I'll post an update after I see them perform.

Petalo Azul by Cuban Author Roberto Sanchez Cuesta

Some of you might already know that  I was in the hair business for some 30 odd years until a few years ago when I decided to take my part time job of web design to full time status. While working in the hair business one of my co-workers was a gentleman whose name is Roberto Sanchez Cuesta. Roberto loved poetry and I would always watch him as he jotted down notes on small scraps of paper.

I have been out of the hair business for quite some time now and hadn't seen Roberto. I recently dropped by where his wife Nelly works near my home and found out thru his wife that Roberto's poetry had been published.

I was shocked to say the least and it was explained to me by his wife Nelly that she had gathered up dozens of these small notes that he had written throughout the years and with some help these writings had been transfered to a computer where they were compiled to make a rough draft and later a book of all his poetry.

I have started to read parts of his book where in his poems and decimas he talks about a multitude of subjects. Roberto was born in 1921 and always dreamed of seeing his poetry published, today at the wise age of 88 his dream has come true.

If you want to own a truly unique book check out "Petalo Azul" it's available at any Barnes & Noble or online at Amazon.com, I'm providing a link to the Barnes & Nobles site below.

I've added this information here because I think this book merrits the mention and is one you'll be glad to add to your collection. Very few write from the heart and this is one of those which will take you back to a different time.

If you should decide to buy the book, please, after reading it, return here and share your thoughts or comments with others. I believe that this would make a great gift for anyone during the holiday season. I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book directly from the author and I will save it and share it with my kids when they are old enough.

Is it right to wish a Merry Christmas in America

Hi, all, this happens to be my very first post on Cubanazos and I will keep it short. I would like to thank my good friend Artie and new friend Omar, for allowing me to contribute to this wonderful site.
This happens to be the holidays and living in this great New York Metropolitan area and as I do every year, I watched the lighting of the Rockefeller Christmas tree, last night. One thing I use to hear in previous years was, "Merry Christmas to all", thru out the show, I have not heard this the last few years. What have we become in America, that most people are afraid to say "Merry Christmas". I believe this is something that most people experince in Communist countries, not in America, what happened to freedom of speech.
I know it's early, but from my family and me, we wish everyone a wonderful Merry Christmas to all.

Sh*t That Makes You Say, Hmmmm...

Much has been made of the Allah fearing, Muslim moderates deafeningly silent condemnation of radical, murderous Islamists.

I find it puzzling that our African American brothers fail to use their most vocal members, Jackson and Sharpton, to do the same of this garbage. Hmmmmm....

Old Friend Joins Cubanazos

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to let everyone know that we have a new contributing writer at Cubanazos.com, his name is Angel Hierrezuelo. Angel and I go back quite a ways. Angel and I first met shortly after Angel's arrival to the U.S. back in 1967. We were attending grammar school in West New York, New Jersey and we were just 13 years old. Amazing how time goes by. We also attended High School togther until I joined the Army in 1972. Unfortunately we lost touch for nealy 20 years until recently when I looked for my friend and was able to find him on the World Wide Web. It truly is a small world thanks to the internet. Although we haven't had alot of time to share together, I for one am very happy to have found my friend. You'll be hearing more from Angel himself here on Cubanazos.com as time goes by. So for now I wish him and his family the very best.
If you happen to read this article and know Angel or want to contact him for any reason you can do so by sending email to angel@cubanazos.com

Here's a little background on Angel Hierrezuelo

Angel was born March, 1954 at Hospital Militar de Santiago de Cuba. He traveled from la Habana to Mexico City in late 1965, once he acquired his visa he entered the US, arriving in 1966 at La Guardia Airport, New York. While growing up he attended Memorial High in West New York, N.J. Studied engineering at the Newark College of Engineering. He graduated in 1977 and Presently works as a Design Engineer/Project Manager in NJ in charge of the U-Pick-It system. Angel invented and designed the U-Pick-It system which was featured in the Documentary “The World's Largest Casino, Macau, China” by the National Geographic.

WW II Battleship sailor Harold B. Estes tells Obama to shape up or ship out !

I just checked this out on Snopes.com and to date it is undetermined if this letter is in fact, true...I will keep you updated but, in the meantime thought you might want to read it. Snopes says that there's no doubt that the man does exsist and is a long-serving veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Dear President Obama,
My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.
I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate. Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.
So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish. I can't figure out what country you are the president of.
You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
" We're no longer a Christian nation"
" America is arrogant" - (Your wife even Announced to the world,"America is mean-Spirited. " Please tell her to try preaching
That nonsense to 23 generations of our War dead buried all over the globe who Died for no other reason than to free a Whole lot of strangers from tyranny and Hopelessness.)
I'd say shame on the both of you, but I don't think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.
After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals."
Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.
I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue. You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.
And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.

You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That's not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

Sincerely,
Harold B. Estes

New Talent Comes To Miami

There's a lot of talented individuals in Cuba. Unfortunately not everyone gets the opportunity to show their talent. These guys have now been here in the U.S. for 9 months. I recently met Lerys and he's one down to earth guy, I expect they'll be going places with their music. I'd love to hear them playing on the radio but its a tough business to break in to. I've added their two recent songs. Wanna help these guys out? If you're in Miami give the stations a call and ask to have them play "Anda Sin Cabeza" or "Muevelo". Call 95.7 El Sol (305)446-9595 or 98.3 La Kalle at (866)907-9898 and request their music. Lets help one of our own, they deserve it.

Iranian Nuclear Threat Targets U.S., Israel

Concerns about Iran's nuclear capabilities — and their potentially devastating impact on America — are mounting, a special report from Newsmax.TV reveals.

The Islamic republic has test-fired missiles capable of reaching Israel, southeastern Europe, and U.S. bases in the Mideast — and published reports say Iran is within a year of developing its own nuclear bomb.

Security experts warn that even one nuclear device in the hands of a rogue nation could be used against the United States in a devastating electromagnetic pulse attack, an intense burst of energy from an exploding nuclear warhead high above the Earth.

So why isn't the Obama administration doing more to prevent a nuclear nightmare?

“I get very, very nervous about it,” Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., told Newsmax.TV's Kathleen Walter. “I think Iran will have a nuclear weapon. I think now it's only a question of when.”

The United States is caught in the middle of a Mideast faceoff between one of its strongest allies, Israel, and Iran. Iran has threatened to wipe Israel off the map, and Israel refuses to rule out a preemptive strike against its adversary, while insisting that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

If the United States tries to prevent Iran from making nuclear weapons, its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has vowed a campaign of bloody revenge.

Iran's hatred of Israel “is rooted in ideology,” said Walid Phares of Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “The Iranian regime is jihadist, and they do not acknowledge nor accept the idea that a non-Islamic, non-jihadist state could exist in the region.”

Although Iran is thousands of miles from America's shores, its belligerent actions could have far-reaching repercussions. A regional war or nuclear attack could cause an already shaky U.S. economy to collapse.

Even scarier is the growing threat of an electromagnetic pulse attack, security analysts say. Such an attack could destroy all electronic devices over a massive area, from cell phones to computers to America's electrical grid, experts say.

“Within a year of that attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can't support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity,” said Frank Gaffney, president of the Center for Security Policy. “That would be a world without America, as a practical matter. And that is exactly what I believe the Iranians are working towards.”

President Barack Obama has committed the U.S. government to a diplomatic approach for resolving the high-stakes nuclear dispute, but Iran has rebuffed Obama's overtures. Meanwhile, Congress is working on legislation to grant Obama the power to impose crippling sanctions on Iran if the talk-first approach doesn't work.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., says such sanctions are long overdue.

“A nuclear Iran is a threat to the Iranian people, to Israel, to the Middle East, to the national security of the United States. And what is Congress doing about it? Nothing. We have proposed legislation time and time again to have real, substantial sanctions leveled against Iran. Now, we like to point fingers and say the U.N. has not done enough, but really we should be pointing the fingers at ourselves.”

The Obama administration has pressed Israel to halt all settlement building and to refrain from attacking Iran, hoping such efforts will lure Iran and other Mideast Arab nations to the negotiating table.

Mort Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, says that sort of approach is wrong.

“[Obama] says Arabs can keep building in the West Bank, Arabs can keep building in eastern Jerusalem . . . but Jews can't. There's no other way to define this than racist.”

Time is running out to stop Iran, Klein says.

“America should say that everything is on the table and we will pursue whatever is necessary – military option, severe sanctions, whatever is necessary to stop these weapons. This is serious business. Al-Qaida has made clear how seriously they can harm American interests, and with nuclear weapons it's just beyond belief the horror that can ensue.”

But some critics are pushing for less intervention.

“Arguing for sanctions against Iran, and threatening them with bombs, or encouraging Israel to bomb Iran makes no sense whatsoever,” said Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. “So many other times this argument has been won by pure economics . . . This is what brought the Soviets to their knees – it was financial.”

Others wonder whether the United States missed the perfect opportunity to disarm Iran, failing to take advantage of the widespread turmoil and push for reform that occurred in the aftermath of the country's disputed recent presidential elections.

“Eventually the Iranian regime, if not reformed from the inside, is going to get the nukes, is going to use them in a deterrence fashion, and eventually if there is a confrontation it may use them for real,” Phares said. “This revolt of Tehran may well become another Iranian revolution. Now its success is conditioned by how far the United States and the international community go in assisting this democratic movement.”

The more time Obama devotes to the diplomatic approach, critics warn, the more time Iran has to realize its nuclear ambitions and even sell its technology to other nations or terrorists.

“I think the president's learning a lesson,” Hoekstra said. “I mean, the president was brutal on the previous administration on foreign policy, saying, you know, 'Your policy on North Korea is bad; your policy on Iran is bad.' Everywhere and anything the former president did in foreign policy was terrible [according to Obama], and he was going to come in and fix it. I think he's finding out that foreign policy is hard.”

Jeb Bush Warns of Obama's 'Toxic Cocktail'

Jeb Bush has issued a withering attack on the spending proposals of the Obama administration in front of a large crowd of Catholic activists in Italy, warning that the government’s policies will enlarge the role of the state at the expense of personal freedom.

He then suggested viable alternatives to the proposals, and gave as examples three faith and community-based initiatives he developed when he was governor of Florida from 1998 to 2006.

Addressing the gathering in Rimini on Aug. 28, hosted by the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation, the brother of former President George W. Bush warned that the past has shown that such government intervention doesn’t work, but rather leads to a lengthening of a recession and restrictions on individuals from pursuing their dreams.

“There is an inverse relationship between the size, scale, and scope of government and human freedom,” he said. “The bigger the government is, the less freedom individuals have to pursue their dreams, and the pursuit of those dreams is an integral part of our progress.”

Liberty and freedom, he went on, “create more creativity, innovation, and prosperity for more people than any government program ever created. Most, if not all, great advances in life occur by the creative genius of peoples unencumbered by the shackles of the state.”

He added that large government makes people less responsible and engaged about solving problems in their own communities, families, and societies. “People begin to believe that compassion is measured by how much government is expended to try and solve the problem, and we don’t achieve the desired result,” he explained. “In fact, it becomes harder and harder to solve the problems as families, and as individuals in community.”

Bush stressed that the Obama administration’s spending proposals exceed those of the Great Society and the New Deal, and then went on to list them: the $787 billion stimulus package(of which only 15 percent has been spent), the $1.2 trillion healthcare bill, plus hundreds of billions in planned spending for cap-and-trade.

“The debate that we’re having in the United States, and here as well, might be a little different if we actually had the money, but in fact we don’t have the cash,” he said. “Today the budget deficit is $1.8 trillion and the Obama administration expects it to grow to $9 trillion in the next eight years. That is a rosy prediction because it requires economic growth of 3 percent per year for the next nine years.”

Furthermore, Bush highlighted a “toxic cocktail” of government intervention in both financial services and the auto industry which, he predicted, will bring “conflicts with far-reaching implications” beyond just these two sectors of the economy. “Even without a recession and new spending, the cost of government will increase in the coming years,” he warned. “Without a return to limited government and without reform, the cost of these programs combined with the projected debt will sadly exceed our ability to pay without eliminating the funding for our defense, environment, education, and other social services.”

But he stressed there is an alternative: a focus on subsidiarity and the importance of the family. “An alternative approach recognizes that the family is the most important political organization ever created,” he said to loud applause. “Loving parents whose organizing principle is the love and betterment of their children at their own material expense is a powerful force for social progress. In fact, if wholesome family life were the norm in the U.S., a significant amount of the demands placed on government would evaporate.”

Stressing the importance of subsidiarity, he said it was not only an integral part of Catholic social teaching but also a foundational principle in the creation of the United States. “Wherever possible, government should empower individuals, families, and faith- and community-based organizations rather than craft them out with mind-numbing rules, regulations, and command and control policies.”

He then alluded to three programs he initiated in Florida to show the effectiveness of this approach: The first was a community-based childcare system that he said was a vast improvement on a state-run system and led to more adoptions into loving families, better trained foster parents, and fewer abandoned kids. The second was to set up a totally faith-based prison, run by volunteers of many faiths and which has a significantly lower re-offending rate compared to state-run prisons. The third was an award system, with financial incentives, given to schools that showed an improvement in results. Florida schools, he said, now have results that exceed the national average and “lower income students have made the greatest gains.”

Bush said that while he would like the debate to be a “little more civil and substantive.” he said he was “heartened” that a “very lively debate” was now taking place about the proper role of government in society. He said an “emerging coalition” is coming to the fore, one which is increasingly supporting the belief that “government cannot spend its way to our prosperity” and that “strong families and a robust civil society have been, and will be, at the core of our successes.”

How this new coalition emerges in the next few years, he said in closing, “will have much to say about who we are as a nation as we move forward in these exciting and perilous times.”

A Little Background On Glenn Beck

Based in Philadelphia, Glenn Beck is casting a tall shadow as the next phenomenon of talk radio. The former Top 40 DJ entered the talk format in 2001 and already his show is broadcast nearly 200 stations nationwide. Millions of listeners are drawn to this modern-day story teller who is armed with a quick wit, an informed opinion, and a unique ability to inspire others to experience their full potential with an open heart. His on-air presence is both commanding and inviting – a trait he has been refining for the last 27 years.

Glenn started in radio when he was only 13 years old by winning a local radiocontest to be a DJ for an hour. After high school graduation, Glenn pursued his career as a Top 40 DJ at stations all over the country. Eventually, he landed an opportunity in Corpus Christi, Texas, as the youngest morning guy in the U.S. at 18 years old. His career was soaring and took him to Top 40 morning shows in Baltimore, Houston, Phoenix, Washington, and New Haven, Conn. He rode the wave of professional success into the 1990's, when he found a new love, talk radio.

He inherited the 18th placed position at WFLA-AM and took it to the #1 position in his first year, giving the station its highest ratings ever. Within 18 months, Premiere Radio Networks, the leading radio syndication company in the country, offered Glenn the opportunity to go national. In January 2002, The Glenn Beck Program launched on 47 stations.

The Glenn Beck Program is now ranked as the 3rd most listened to talk show in America.

...But Glen Beck Was Only Telling The Truth !

NEW YORK — Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel today after a vacation with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.
A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck's show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That's more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

While it's unclear what effect, if any, this will ultimately have on Fox and Beck, it is already making advertisers skittish about hawking their wares within the most opinionated cable TV shows.

The Clorox Co., a former Beck advertiser, now says that "we do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show hosts." The maker of bleach and household cleaners said in a statement that it has decided not to advertise on political talk shows.

The shows present a dilemma for advertisers, who usually like a "safe" environment for their messages. The Olbermanns, Hannitys, O'Reillys, Maddows and Becks of the TV world are more likely to say something that will anger a viewer, who might take it out on sponsors.

They also host the most-watched programs on their networks.

"This is a good illustration of that conundrum," said Rich Hallabran, spokesman for UPS Stores, which he said has temporarily halted buying ads on Fox News Channel as a whole.

Beck can bring the eyeballs. With the health care debate raising political temperatures, his show had its biggest week ever right before his vacation, averaging 2.4 million viewers each day, according to Nielsen Media Research.

He was actually on another Fox show July 28 when he referred to Obama as a racist with "a deep-seated hatred for white people." The network immediately distanced itself from Beck's statement, but Beck didn't. He used his radio show the next day to explain why he believed that. He would not comment for this article, spokesman Matthew Hiltzik said.

ColorofChange.org quickly targeted companies whose ads had appeared during Beck's show, telling them what he had said and seeking a commitment to drop him. The goal is to make Beck a liability, said James Rucker, the organization's executive director.

"They have a toxic asset," Rucker said. "They can either clean it up or get rid of it."

It's not immediately clear how many of the companies actually knew they were advertising on Beck's show. Sometimes commercial time is chosen for a specific show, but often it is bought on a rotation basis, meaning the network sprinkles the ads throughout the day on its own schedule. Sometimes ads appear by mistake; Best Buy said it bought commercial time for earlier in the day, and one of its ads unexpectedly appeared in Beck's show.

One company, CVS Caremark, said it advertises on Fox but hadn't said anything about Beck. Now it has told its advertising agency to inform Fox that it wanted no commercials on Beck.

"We support vigorous debate, especially around policy issues that affect millions of Americans, but we expect it to be informed, inclusive and respectful," said spokeswoman Carolyn Castel.

Besides the unpredictability of the opinionated cable hosts, the rapid pace of today's wired world complicates decisions on where to place ads, said Kathleen Dunleavy, a spokeswoman for Sprint. She said she was surprised at how fast the Beck issue spread across social media outlets and how quickly advertiser names were attached to it.

UPS' Hallabran said the decision to pull commercials "should not be interpreted as we are permanently withdrawing our advertising from Fox." He said the company wants to reach viewers with a wide spectrum of opinions.

Except for UPS Stores, there's no evidence that any advertisers who say they don't want to be on Beck's show are leaving Fox. Network spokeswoman Irena Briganti said the companies have simply requested the ads be moved elsewhere and that Fox hasn't lost any revenue.

She wouldn't say whether Fox was benefiting from any anti-anti-Beck backlash, with companies looking to support him. Some Beck supporters have urged fans to express their displeasure at companies for abandoning their man.

Beck supporters have suggested that retaliation might have something to do with ColorofChange.org's campaign. One of the group's founders, Van Jones, now works in the Obama administration and has been criticized by Beck. But Rucker said Jones has nothing to do with ColorofChange.org now and didn't even know about the campaign before it started.

Beck's strong ratings -- even at 5 p.m. EDT he often outdraws whatever CNN and MSNBC show in prime-time -- make it unlikely Beck is going anywhere even as the list of advertisers avoiding him approaches three dozen.

But it could mean advertising time becomes cheaper on his show than such a large audience would normally command. Some of his show's advertisers last week included a male enhancement pill, a law firm looking to sue on behalf of asbestos victims, a company selling medical supplies to diabetics and a water filter company.

Rucker said ColorofChange.org has contacted about 60 companies regarding Beck, and is heartened by the response.

"It's causing a certain conversation around Beck, which I think is important," he said.

Poll: Americans losing confidence in Obama

The following is news from Associated Press on Fri Aug 21....Losing faith in President Barack Obama, Really ?

WASHINGTON – A new poll says that Americans, concerned over the future of health care reform and anxious about the growing federal budget deficit, are losing faith in President Barack Obama.

The Washington Post-ABC News survey found that less that half of Americans — 49 percent — say they believe the president will make the right decisions for the country. That's down from 60 percent at the 100-day mark of the Obama presidency.

The poll published Friday says Obama's overall approval is 57 percent, 12 points lower than it was at its peak in April. Fifty-three percent disapprove of the way he's handling the budget deficit and his approval on health care continues to deteriorate.

The national survey was conducted Aug. 13-17 and has a sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Cuba's communism stays, says Castro

HAVANA, Cuba, August 3, 2009 - Cuba's President Raul Castro has made it clear he's willing to have talks with the United States on any issue except changes to the island's communist system.

In a speech to a biannual session of the National Assembly, Castro said Cuba's political regime was not negotiable.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that her country wants Cuba to get rid of communism so the two countries can dialogue and American president Barack Obama said he wants to "recast" relations with Cuba, but only if it implements reforms.

Castro, who began leading the country three years ago when his older brother, Fidel, underwent gastric surgery - and then formally assumed presidency last year - was insistent that there was no chance of that happening.

"We are ready to talk about everything, but...not to negotiate our political and social system," the 78-year-old Castro declared.

"I was not chosen as president to restore capitalism to Cuba or to renounce the revolution. I was elected to defend, maintain and continue perfecting socialism, not to destroy it."

He added that those expecting political change after the death of the former president and his generation were "doomed to failure".

Although he noted that there has been less aggression and anti-Cuban rhetoric under the Obama administration, Castro also noted that the almost 50-year-old embargo remained in place.

On the economic front, the Cuban president in his speech announced that the government had cut its budget for a second time this year amid a growing financial crisis.

The government recently pushed through a series of austerity measures and cut its projected economic growth estimate for this year to 1.7 per cent.

'THE Axis of Idiots'

(Too bad we don't have folks on Capitol Hill willing to speak out like this. J.D., Pendry is a retired Marine Sergeant Major who writes for Random House.
He is eloquent, and as taught by the Marines, he seldom beats around the bush!)

Jimmy Carter, you are the father of the Islamic Nazi movement. You threw the Shah under the bus, welcomed the Ayatollah home, and then lacked the spine to confront the terrorists when they took our embassy and our people hostage. You're the runner-in-chief.

Bill Clinton, you played ring around the Lewinsky while the terrorists were at war with us. You got us into a fight with them in Somalia and then you ran from it. Your weak-willed responses to the U.S..S. Cole and the First Trade Center Bombing and Our Embassy Bombings emboldened the killers. Each time you failed to respond adequately, they grew bolder, until 9/11/2001.

John Kerry, dishonesty is your most prominent attribute.. You lied about American Soldiers in Vietnam . Your military service, like your life, is more fiction than fact. You've accused our military of terrorizing women and children in Iraq . You called Iraq the wrong war, wrong place, wrong time, the same words you used to describe Vietnam . You're a fake. You want to run from Iraq and abandon the Iraqis to murderers just as you didto the Vietnamese. Iraq, like Vietnam, is another war that you were for, before you were against it.

John Murtha, you said our military was broken. You said we can't win militarily in Iraq . You accused United States Marines of cold-blooded murder without proof and said we should redeploy to Okinawa . Okinawa, Jo hn ? And the Democrats call you their military expert! Are you sure you didn't suffer a traumatic brain injury while you were off building your war hero resume? You're a sad, pitiable, corrupt and washed up politician. You're not a Marine, sir. You wouldn't amount to a good pimple on a real Marine's butt. You're a phony and a disgrace. Run away, Jo hn .

Dick Durbin, you accused our Soldiers at Guantanamo of being Nazis, tenders of Soviet style gulags and as bad as the regime of Pol Pot , who murdered two million of his own people after your party abandoned Southeast Asia to the Communists. Now you want to abandon the Iraqis to the same fate. History was not a good teacher for you, was it? Lord help us! See Dick run.

Ted Kennedy, for days on end you held poster-sized pictures from Abu Ghraib in front of any available television camera. Al Jazeera quoted you saying that Iraqi's torture chambers were open under new management. Did you see the news, Teddy? The Islamic Nazis demonstrated another beheading for you. If you truly supported our troops, you'd show the world poster-sized pictures of that atrocity and demand the annihilation of it. Your legislation stripping support from the South Vietnamese led to a communist victory there. You're a bloated, drunken fool bent on repeating the same historical blunder that turned freedom-seeking people over to homicidal, genoc idal maniacs. To paraphrase Jo hn Murtha, all while sitting on your wide, gin-soaked rear-end in Washington

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Carl Levine, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Russ Feingold, Hillary Clinton, Pat Leahy, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, the Hollywood Leftist morons, et al, ad nauseam: Every time you stand in front of television cameras and broadcast to the Islamic Nazis that we went to war because our President lied, that the war is wrong and our Soldiers are torturers, that we should leave Iraq, you give the Islamic butchers - the same ones that tortured and mutilated American Soldiers - cause to think that we'll run away again, and all they have to do is hang on a little longer. It is inevitable that we, the infidels, will have to defeat the Islamic jihadists. Better to do it now on their turf, than later on ours after they have gained both strength and momentum.

American news media, the New York Times particularly: Each time you publish stories about national defense secrets and our intelligence gathering methods, you become one united with the sub-human pieces of camel dung that torture and mutilate the bodies of American Soldiers. You can't strike up the courage to publish cartoons, but you can help Al Qaeda destroy my country. Actually, you are more dangerous to us than Al Qaeda is. Think about that each time you face Mecca to admire your Pulitzer.

You are America 's 'AXIS OF IDIOTS.' Your Collective Stupidity will destroy us. Self-serving politics and terrorist-abetting news scoops are more important to you than our national security or the lives of innocent civilians and Soldiers. It bothers you that defending ourselves gets in the way of your elitist sport of politics and your ignorant editorializing. There is as much blood on your hands as is on the hands of murdering terrorists.. Don't ever doubt that. Your frolics will only serve to extend this war as they extended Vietnam . If you want our Soldiers home as you claim, knock off the crap and try supporting your country ahead of supporting your silly political aims and aiding our enemies.

Yes, I'm questioning your patriotism. Your loyalty ends with self. I'm also questioning why you're stealing air that decent Americans could be breathing. You don't deserve the protection of our men and women in uniform. You need to run away from this war, this country. Leave the war to the people who have the will to see it through and the country to people who are willing to defend it.

Our country has two enemies:Those who want to destroy us from the outside and those who attempt it from within.

Semper Fi,
J. D. Pendry - Sergeant Major, USMC, Retired

Barrack Obama, I have had it with your behavior and administration !

I have seen this letter attributed to “Every real American” and also to a 4th grade teacher named Kathleen Lyday from Hillsboro, MO. And now Franklin Bell. How do we know who to thank for this well-written letter to our bumbling President? Will the REAL author please stand up.

April 9, 2009

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC20500

Mr. Obama:

I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on your recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me personally.

You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the United States of America. You are responsible to the citizens of the United States. You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth..

I personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of Europe? Are you brain dead? What do you think the Marshall Plan was all about? Do you not understand or know the history of the 20th century?

Where do you get off telling a Muslim country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country? Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the principles governing this country, at least until you came along, come directly from this
heritage. Do you not understand this?

Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to all Americans. Our President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the king of Saudi Arabia. You don’t show Great Britain, our best and one of our oldest allies, the respect they deserve yet you bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia. How dare you, sir! How dare you!

You can’t find the time to visit the graves of our greatest generation because you don’t want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a mosque in Turkey. You offended our dead and every veteran when you give the Germans more respect than the people who saved the German people from themselves. What’s the matter with you?

I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of yourselves, all of you.

You are so self-righteously offended by the big bankers and the American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the real thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do you intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt it.

What about the U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to their staff members - on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a 17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my employer. You haven’t said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn’t!

Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that’s $45 million more than the AIG bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million - not a bad take. Who authorized that and why haven’t you expressed your outrage at this group who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right now.

I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we are getting increasingly fed up with all of you. I also want you to know that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive to every one of my sensibilities. I promise you that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two terms destroying my beautiful country.

Sincerely,

Franklin T. Bell, CFM, RPA, FMA

You Get What You Pay For.

And boy oh boy, we will be paying for Obamas' legacy for a loooong *&^%^&* time!

The Obama administration has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to protect Saudi Arabia and four of its princes from being held accountable for their alleged role in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States that killed almost 3,000 Americans.

Through its solicitor general, Elena Kagan, the Obama administration has asked that the Saudis be held immune under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, or FSIA, even though there is ample U.S. evidence of complicity by the Saudi government and the named princes in support of al-Qaida's terrorist attack.

Memorial Day Video Tributes

The USMC Silent Drill Platoon

Memorial Day Tribute - Thank You !!!!!!

From Artie Ayala & Omar Fernandez - To All The Soldiers Out There Who Defend Our Country's Freedom ...Thank You !!!!!!

Daniel Smith has written a song to express appreciation for our U.S. Armed Forces active and retired. The Thank You Foundation has adopted it as its theme song for its "Mission of Appreciation". It is a wonderful tribute and "Thank You" to those who have served and are serving today.

When you consider the service and sacrifice of the 26 million plus veterans of this great country, we all should be willing to thank a WWII Veteran one more time, help change the name of the "Forgotten War" and thank those who served in Korea, let a Viet-Nam Veteran hear the words "Thank You" for perhaps the first time, and let the men and women who wear the uniform today know that their service and sacrifice is appreciated.

For more information about how to support a Veteran or Service Member, please visit the foundation web site at www.thethankyoufoundation.org or call toll free at 1-877-280-8893.

How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?

As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is one line: FINAL, and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end. It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world's change have overtaken it.

On a small scale, Morton's, while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.

Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.

How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a "star" we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails.

They can be interesting, nice people, but they are not heroes to me any longer.

A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world. A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad. He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him. A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordnance on a street near where he was guarding a station. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded. He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad.

The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists. We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of our magazines. The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.

I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton's is a big subject. There are plenty of other stars in the American firmament .... the policemen and women who go off on patrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive, The orderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terrible accidents and prepare them for surgery, the teachers and nurses who throw their whole spirits into caring for autistic children, the kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards. Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse.

Now you have my idea of a real hero. We are not responsible for the operation of the universe, and what happens to us is not terribly important. God is real, not a fiction, and when we turn over our lives to Him, he takes far better care of us than we could ever do for ourselves. In a word, we make ourselves sane when we fire ourselves as the directors of the movie of our lives and turn the power over to Him. I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters. This is my highest and best use as a human.

I can put it another way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor as Olivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin .... or Martin Mull or Fred Willard -- or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman or as good a writer as Fitzgerald. Or even remotely close to any of them. But I could be a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a good son to the parents who had done so much for me. This came to be my main task in life. I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with my wife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister's help). I cared for and paid attention to them in their declining years. I stayed with my father as he got sick, went into extremis and then into a coma and then entered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.

This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of the soldiers in Iraq or the firefighters in New York. I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as a human.

Cuba Solidarity Day 2009

What
For one day, this May 20, the world will stand in solidarity with the legitimate aspirations and hopes of the Cuban people for freedom and democracy.

Why
May 20th marks the 108th anniversary of Cuba’s independence from Spain. Yet the struggle to realize the full blessings of independence in a modern world so fiercely desired by the Cuban people remains incomplete. Individual rights and liberties, the touchstones of a modern democratic society, are callously denied by a communist dictatorship that has ruled the island with absolute power for more than 50 years. Rights of speech, travel, association, and access to information as well basic economic freedoms are withheld in ways inconsistent with universal values and fundamental human rights. For this reason May 20 th, Cuba Solidarity Day, remains closely associated around the world with the legitimate aspirations and hopes of all the Cuban people, especially those who form part of a robust and growing civil society movement who most courageously resist cruel and arbitrary demands for obedience and silence.

Take action
1. Organize an event (panel discussion, march, vigil, etc.) ACTION
2. Target local and international media through opinion pieces
3. Join Global Cuba Solidarity Movement on Facebook
4. Upload events and learn more on www.solidaridadcuba.org/eng/

How It Starts!

Yesterday, my wife and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting new author and new friend Eddie Calcines. I finally met the gentleman whom I have only had the privilege of speaking to by phone and email. We were not disappointed. Mr. Calcines read excerpts from his book, Leaving Glorytown, with heart felt compassion and sincerity of word. His visit to the Key West bookstore, Voltaire, was well received and attended. Both my wife and I felt the emotion and conviction of his words which at times made it impossible to keep the moisture from our eyes. Eddie's words and conviction are equal to a knowing wink from a friend that shows the empathy that only Cubans can share.

Also in attendance was Alejandro Pascual, friend and keeper of the keys of the San Carlos Institute in Key West. We look forward to Eddie making an appearance at the SCI in the near future.

Sincere thanks to my friend and the brains behind this blog, Artie Ayala, for his efforts in making Eddie's trip to Key West a great success!

Now for the antithesis of the previous words, click on the link above to see where we are heading. Shades of Glorytown!

Taxpayers to get rude surprise

Millions of Americans enjoying their small windfall from President Barack Obama's "Making Work Pay" tax credit are in for an unpleasant surprise next spring.

The government is going to want some of that money back.

The tax credit is supposed to provide up to $400 to individuals and $800 to married couples as part of the massive economic recovery package enacted in February. Most workers started receiving the credit through small increases in their paychecks in the past month.

But new tax withholding tables issued by the IRS could cause millions of taxpayers to get hundreds of dollars more than they are entitled to under the credit, money that will have to be repaid at tax time.

At-risk taxpayers include a broad swath of the public: married couples in which both spouses work; workers with more than one job; retirees who have federal income taxes withheld from their pension payments and Social Security recipients with jobs that provide taxable income.

The Internal Revenue Service acknowledges problems with the withholding tables but has done little to warn average taxpayers.

"They need to get the Goodyear blimp out there on this," said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of taxation for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

For many, the new tax tables will simply mean smaller-than-expected tax refunds next year, IRS spokesman Terry Lemons said. The average refund was nearly $2,700 this year.

But taxpayers who calculate their withholding so they get only small refunds could face an unwelcome tax bill next April, said Jackie Perlman, an analyst with the Tax Institute at H&R Block.

"They are going to get a surprise," she said.

Perlman's advice: check your federal withholding to make sure sufficient taxes are being taken out of your pay. If you are married and both spouses work, you might consider having taxes withheld at the higher rate for single filers. If you have multiple jobs, you might consider having extra taxes withheld by one of your employers. You can make that request with a Form W-4.

The IRS has a calculator on its Web site to help taxpayers figure withholding. So do many private tax preparers.

Obama has touted the tax credit as one of the big achievements of his first 100 days in office, boasting that 95 percent of working families will qualify in 2009 and 2010.

The credit pays workers 6.2 percent of their earned income, up to a maximum of $400 for individuals and $800 for married couples who file jointly. Individuals making more $95,000 and couples making more than $190,000 are ineligible.

The tax credit was designed to help boost the economy by getting more money to consumers in their regular paychecks. Employers were required to start using the new withholding tables by April 1.

The tables, however, don't take into account several common categories of taxpayers, experts said.

For example:

--A single worker with two jobs making $20,000 a year at each job will get a $400 boost in take-home pay at each of them, for a total of $800. That worker, however, is eligible for a maximum credit of $400, so the remaining $400 will have to be paid back at tax time -- either through a smaller refund or a payment to the IRS.

The IRS recognized there could be a similar problem for married couples if both spouses work, so it adjusted the withholding tables. The fix, however, was imperfect.

-- A married couple with a combined income of $50,000 is eligible for an $800 credit. However, if both spouses work and make more than $13,000, the new withholding tables give them each a $600 boost -- for a total of $1,200.

There were 33 million married couples in 2008 in which both spouses worked. That's 55 percent of all married couples, according to the Census Bureau.

-- A single college student with a part-time job making $10,000 would get a $400 boost in pay. However, if that student is claimed as a dependent on a parent's tax return, she doesn't qualify for the credit and would have to repay it when she files next year.

Some retirees face even bigger headaches.

The Social Security Administration is sending out $250 payments to more than 50 million retirees in May as part of the economic stimulus package. The payments will go to people who receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, railroad retirement benefits or veteran's disability benefits.

The payments are meant to provide a boost for people who don't qualify for the tax credit. However, they will go to retirees even if they have earned income and receive the credit. Those retirees will have the $250 payment deducted from their tax credit -- but not until they file their tax returns next year, long after the money may have been spent.

Retirees who have federal income taxes withheld from pension benefits also are getting an income boost as a result of the new withholding tables. However, pension benefits are not earned income, so they don't qualify for the tax credit. That money will have to paid back next year when tax returns are filed.

More than 20 million retirees and survivors receive payments from defined benefit pension plans, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. However, it is unclear how many have federal taxes withheld from their payments.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union raised concerns about the effect of the tax credit on pension payments in a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in March.

Geithner responded that Treasury and IRS understood the concerns and were "exploring ways to mitigate that effect."

Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, the top Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, said Geithner has yet to respond to concerns raised by committee members.

"So far we've got the, 'If we don't address this maybe it will go away' approach," Camp said.
